Chosing my Dance Magazine Title

I came up with a few suggestions, such as:
Dancify
Elektro
Elextic
Vibe
V.I.P
Radio-Active

Having completed a survey, I have come to the conclusion that the most suitable and commonly chosen name is "VIBE".

I now must decide on a front for my title.  For this I am using the website 1001fonts.com.  This will allow me to chose the most suitable style, whilst continuing with the Serif Font trend.

Here are some examples I am considering:
Metro Regular

Kells Uncial Bold

Bubble Bath Regular

Shotling Regular

Chalk Line Outline

20 db Regular

Cleanwork Regular

All of these come with their own level of difficulty to read.  An important factor like that should not be just "glossed" over when choosing a magazine Masthead.  Although I do want it to look original, and effective.  It can not be over the top.

Cohen's Moral Panic

Moral Panic - A condition, episode, person or group of persons emerges as a threat to societal values and interests.  Its nature is presented in a stylised and stereotypical fashion by the mass media.  The moral barricades are manned by editors, bishops, politicians and other right thinking people; socially credited experts pronounce their diagnoses and solution; ways of coping are evolved or (more often) resorted to.

Alternatively: Moral Panics involve the construction of "folk devils" that need controlling, which leads to increased social control.  This occurs during periods when powerful groups or the ruling classes face troubled times.  The panic then becomes a substitute for the real social issues.

Features of the Moral Panic Include:
Concern: Behaviour of a particular group represented as having threat.  There must be awareness that the behaviour of the group or category in question is likely to have a negative effect on society.

Volatility: Short lived. Panics erupt dramatically but are difficult to sustain.  Negative consequences for the rest of us.  Moral panics are highly volatile and tend to disappear as quickly as they appeared due to a wane in public interest or news reports changing to another topic.[

Hostility: Hostility towards the group in question increases, and they become "folk devils". A clear division forms between "them" and "us".

Consensus: Widespread acceptance of the threat posed by this group.  Not necessarily reflecting national concern, but the campaigner will be very vocal whilst the opposition will be weak and disorganised.

Disproportionality: Wild exaggeration of evidence.  Not only the number of people involved, but also the scale of the problem.   The action taken is disproportionate to the actual threat posed by the accused group.

Terminology Examples...

Using my Deyes Magazine as a template, I have highlighted some examples of media terminology that I have used.  These are only a few examples of the post below...

Audience Considerations

Qualities that I want to reflect:
One quality of my target audience could be that they are very up-to-date with current music and technology.  I would like to reflect this in my magazine by including certain features, font, images and colours.  I may also be able to change the layout to lean towards modern times and give a more technological effect.  I may wish to  include exciting font styles to increase the artistic effect of my magazine.  This may mean that it also appeals to different types people rather than my initial audience, this giving me a wider target range.

Aspirations:
My target audience may be inspired by my magazines.  I hope to achieve this with the design, layout and creativity of my magazine.  This may mean that my audience will eventually aspire to be creative in themselves in their future lives.  An ideal reflection of my magazine would be to inspire the audience to become involved in graphic design in their chosen genre of music magazines.

Magazines features and ideas:
Targeting the younger audience, I should keep text short and sweet - for the most part.  Including artists such as Avicii may increase its popularity.  Information on tours and concert could also be included.  Special offer may be offered to buyers of the magazine, giving it a unique selling point (USP).

Advertising my magazine:
As my magazine is of the same genre as MIXMAG, this may give my the opportunity to approach their distributes.  With some luck, they may also be interested in my magazine.

My Target Audience

My ideal Music Magazine will be aimed towards the age range of 17-26.  My magazine will be aimed at males for the majority, but also cater for females.  The reason for this is that I believe Dance music (party music) does not cover just one gender.  My audience should enjoy Dance music as well as the "Nightlife".  Advertisements and Responses for local and distant clubs, strips and bars will most likely be included in the magazine.  Favourite artist may include: Avicii, David Guetta, DJ Fresh, Nicky Romero, Axwell and so on.  These all play a part in their lives, listening to music everyday.  I feel the audience will have an attraction to art and technology, creating my magazine to fit these style may include adding lasers, vibrant colours and striking images.  I believe the most important factor to focus on, is...  What would I look for in a magazine, and does this magazine act me to buy it.  I think if I produce a magazine that I would actually want to buy, then hopefully others of similar age to me, and with the same music taste, will also do the same.

Mood Board

I decided to make a Mood Board on publisher.  As you can probably tell, my chosen genre is Dance Music.  I feel this genre will give me the most room for innovation and creativity.  Using my skills I have developed from creating my Deyes High Mag, I hope to produce a more professional Magazine.  I feel this mood board has provided me with inspiration and sparked a few ideas...

I have include what I feel is important to a Dance Magazine.  I believe vibrant colours catch the eye and give the magazine an atmosphere.  I have also included images of what a typical Dance Musician/DJ might wear.  As well as the artist setting (colours used during concerts).  I have noticed that pink, green, blue and yellow tend to be used more frequently with the Dance genre.
This, as well as the clothes, will be something to consider when I am deciding what clothes my artist may wear, and what setting they should be in.

Monday 14 October 2013

This is now my final proposal for my Deyes High Magazine.  I have improved it since my first attempt and hope to take these skills over to my Music Magazine.  I believe I have used colours that compliment each other really well as you move throughout the magazine.  I have used as maximum of 4 colours for text as it fits with the current trend of existing magazines.  I chose these colours as it follows the logo of Deyes High School.  Using a "Plus" symbol I felt was more effective then using text or shapes.  This also features on many magazines.  I have used attempted to use selling lines and offers which might draw in the reader to read past the front cover of the magazine.  These factors also carry through to my contents page which is shown below...

I decided to try another image on the front cover.  I also added some text to draw the reader in.  However, believing my original image is better, i have not completed this and will instead improve my original...

Deyes High Magazine

This is my Finished Deyes High Magazine front cover.  I decided to keep it clean and simple which can create a more effective look.  I tried adding extra captions and banners to the front, but felt it ruined the image/effect already created.  Having a large title located top left allows the magazine to be stacked with the title still visual, and keeps in trend with current magazines.  I used photoshop to edit the background image.  Increasing the blueness of the sky and brightness as well as sharpness of the grass, has improve the appeal of Deyes as a school.  It creates a happier, cleaner atmosphere.
I chose a specific subject for the front cover, and decided to go with sport.  This appeals to the majority of students and allows for an effective, un-staged shot for the cover.

This is my Deyes High Magazine Contents page.  Created again in Photoshop and InDesign, I was able to produce images of different angles, pans and zooms with increasing focus.  Using a San-Serif Font for the title makes it easier to read, makes it stand out and jump out at the reader.  I have colour coordinated key words in order to grab the readers eye.  I have tried to position the layout of my page like a real magazine, hopefully giving a professional look and providing a higher quality magazine.
I feel my use of white space has been quite efficient when creating my contents page.  Providing clear separation and increasing the professionalism of my magazine.

Advanced Photoshop

The original image is located on the left of the page.  Using Photoshop I am able to change Colour, Sharpness, Vibrance etc...  Just about anything you can think of.  This will aid me when creating my Deyes High magazine and my Music Mag.  I can improve an image by allowing on object to stand out significantly, as shown below.
Or improve the colours to give a happier atmosphere as shown in this image below.  I have also increased the sharpness in the foreground, the "Dodge" of the ball", added some shading to the left side and blurred the background.

Ideology

Ideology is the idea that your conscious and unconscious decision have an effect on your expectations and actions in life.  Ideology translates to the science or study of ideas. However, ideology tends to refer to the way in which people think about the world and their ideal concept of how to live in the world. This is slightly different from philosophy in the sense that ideology encompasses the concept that your ideal concept is the best way.

How ideology relates to media studies:  Media texts always reflect certain values or ideologies though sometimes we may not be aware of this. An example might be that in some texts, such as action films like the Die Hard or the Lethal Weapon series, solving problems with force is seen as an acceptable value and reflects a certain ideology.
The media is a successful carrier of ideology because it reaches such a huge audience. The study of the media allows us to consider and question dominant ideologies and look for the implications of different ideology and value systems.
When studying a media text you may look for the dominant ideology present and question whose world view is represented and which group(s) and their associated world view(s) have not been represented.
Some studies of the media concentrate on viewing texts from particular ideological perspectives, for example a feminist perspective

Deyes High Newsletter Analysis

I have reviewed and criticised the Deyes News Magazine to try and improve my knowledge and understand of what makes a magazine work well with its audience...

I should now be able to show what i have learnt by improving upon my initial school magazine design, using what I have learnt.  Whilst going through and pointing out mistakes with the school magazine, I noticed that there is a few things that I have also done on my own magazine.

Deyes High Magazine

Deyes High Magazine involved me creating a trail (make up) magazine front cover and contents page for Deyes.  This is a learning process on the path to creating my final Music Magazine later on.  I gave this my best shot as it is the first time I have used InDesign and hope to improve over the coming weeks.  Below is a print screen of my front cover...

Using the school colours I have tried to grab the readers attention.  I have achieved this by highlighting key words such as "Head Boy", hopefully drawing the read in.  I have tried to keep the front cover clean by using a white background with smooth edges and lines separating each image and block of text.
Below is my double spread contents page...

Using the caption "Inside This Week" give it a clear headline and make the edition specific to the audience.  Again using the school colours I have highlighted key words in the hope that it will draw the eye of the reader, to read on...   Using images of various angles and shots, I have tried to make it look professional.  On the left page I have designated it to the "Main Story", adding a larger images and text.  Keeping the font the same throughout, other than the "Plus" section, gives that section a different meaning.  In this case, that meaning is that they are not the main story's this week.  Unlikely the story's involved and positioned next to an image related.

InDesign

InDesign allows for ease when creating layouts, magazines or other media.  It allows the user to easily and professionally create pages, covers and double page spreads for the media of their choice.  Above is my design for a contents page.  InDesign allowed me to add grids, collumns and boxes so that I could position text and images in alignment and where is thought they would look the most professional.  "Inside This Week" is the caption I decided to include on the top.  It clearly introduces the reader to this weeks edition.  Then InDesign allowed me to add images with a range of shot and angles, and add caption below, above and to the side, which briefly introduce the story.

Feminism

Feminism can be found as 1st, 2nd or 3rd wave feminism.  Throughout history, women have fought for equality and rights from their male counterparts.  However, in the 19th and 20th century, when women fought to win women's suffrage, education rights, better working conditions and the right to vote.  Women would no longer be treated as sound-class citizens without a vote and campaigned for the vote.  The women's suffrage campaign is the most deeply embedded campaign of the past 250 years.

Laura Mulvery:

Laura Mulvery is a British feminist film theorist and worked at the British Film Institute for many years.  She states that Hollywood cinema puts the spectator in a masculine subject position, with the figure of the woman on screen as the object of desire and "the male gaze".

Semiotics

Semiotics study the linguistics in signs and non-linguistic sign systems such as, the use of colour and symbols.  The word was invented by the linguist and philosopher Saussure.  sassure was a swiss linguist and semiotician.  Semiotics is very closely related to the field of linguistics, which studies the structure and meaning of language more specifically.  Semiotics is usually found divided into three main branches:
Semantics: Relation between signs and the things to which they refer their meaning.
Syntactics: Relations among signs often in formal structures
Pragmatics: Relation between signs and sign-using agents

In this example we have come to globally recognise the Mcdonalds logo and instantly know what it means.  The "M" has become a mental concept for what has become a memorised symbol.  The caption "I'm lovin' it" implies enjoyment when you receive this product.  It makes us believe that we will enjoy it (love it) and therefore buy it at the next opportunity.  The colours used are now also recognised.  The use of yellow is clever as it is the colour in which can be seen the clearest at the furthest distance.  Again putting in peoples mind that this product is always there - for our consumption.
